CORBA at ORL

[front] [news] [projects] [interest] [reports] [jobs]

CORBA is the backbone of our distributed object infrastructure. We chose CORBA for its universal platform coverage; its ``off the shelf'' component standards; and its ability to interoperate with propriety technology, such as OLE and new languages, such as Java. We use commercial CORBA products on Unix platforms, Windows NT and Java. We also develop our own CORBA 2 compliant ORB- omniORB2. The aim is to produce an efficient and low overhead implementation for our in-house developed hardware and software platforms. The main features of omniORB2 are:

  • a fully multi-threaded runtime
  • supports IIOP for universal interoperability
  • an IDL complier which generates CORBA 2 compliant C++ stubs
  • ATM-aware, will run on ATM optimised transport protocol
So far CORBA has been used in the following projects and applications: mobile streams, SPIRIT, Radio ATM, ATM network topology determination and our weather station.
